How to get authorized to drive for the college
In order to drive a college rented, leased or owned vehicle; drivers must meet the following criteria:
- Drivers must be at least 20 years of age and have possessed a driver’s license for a minimum of 3 years.
- A currant driver history must be on file at the SC Department of Public Safety (perspective drivers must submit an authorization to conduct a driver history query (instructions on how to submit authorization to conduct a driver history query are listed below).
- Drivers must maintain a good driver history (as determined by the driver history query).
- Drivers must complete a one time 4 hour defensive driver training course administered by Springfield College Department of Public Safety (course schedule listed above).
All persons seeking to be authorized to drive for the college are responsible for obtaining their own driver history. The SC Department of Public Safety can assist in obtaining your record; however there are states which do not cooperate with a timely return of records. They are: CT, NJ, PA, MD, IL, and HI. These states can take from 2 to 6 weeks to return a query. If you are from one of these states and you can not wait for the state to respond to the query, you’ll have to obtain a copy of your history yourself. You can obtain your history from your state’s DMV or from an online agency.WWW.DMV.org is such a site. The state DMV’s and online sites do require a fee. If you utilize an online agency to obtain a copy of your driver history, make sure that you will receive your copy in a timely manner.
Regardless of what state your license is issued, any person looking to drive a college rented, leased or owned vehicle must submit an authorization to conduct a driver history query.
If you’ve already attended an SC defensive driving course, you still need to provide the SC Department of Public Safety with a currant driver history.
Student and Volunteer driver histories expire annually on October 31st. This means returning students are required to complete the driver history query annually (Anytime between August 1st 2007 and October 31st 2007). Student and volunteer driver histories are kept on file at the SC Department of Public Safety for one semester year.
Faculty and Staff driver histories will expire on December 31st, 2008. This means in the fall of 2008, returning faculty and staff are required to complete the driver history query between August 1st 2008 and December 31st 2008.
