Hart, author of Lies in Silence, will be giving a colloquium at Springfield College
S. J. Hart, author of Lies in Silence, a new book based on the true story of one family's ability to cope with a psychiatric disability, will be giving a colloquium at Springfield College in Dr. Michael Accordino’s Psychiatric Rehabilitation graduate class (RHDS 694) on July 7th, 2008 at 4:00pm in Locklin Hall Room 105.Lies in Silence is a true life story that powerfully represents timely and pertinent issues that include the link between mental illness and genetic predisposition, stigma, overwhelming grief and loss, as well as hopelessness through the eyes of one woman watching her parents, uncles, cousins, siblings, children and eventually herself, become part of the silent, and misunderstood club known as the “mentally ill”. She asks provocative questions in a manner that demands answers regarding incompetent and poorly trained professionals, the lack of urgency in the clinical community to the lowering age of onset of illness, and finally prominent social issues and their connection to what could be an emerging epidemic.
S. J. Hart has presented to classes in psychology, social work, disability studies and liberal arts at Coppin State University, Alvernia College and CUNY-Staten Island. She has also collaborated with Martin Sheen who is currently involved in mental health advocacy work and public service announcements through the Peace of Mind Project (POMP). Mr. Sheen has consulted with her and continues to be an advocate of her book.
Professionals who currently practice in clinical and allied health professions will benefit from this presentation as well as students studying in these areas.
