Martin Dobrow's Bio
Marty Dobrow, Associate Professor of Communications, has been at Springfield College since 1999. He teaches Introduction to Journalism, Advanced Journalism, Sports Writing, Journalistic Ethics, and Journalist as Hero/Journalist as Villain. Dobrow also serves as the faculty advisor to the student newspaper. Additionally, he coordinates internships for the Communication/Sports Journalism major.
Dobrow is the author of two books. His most recent is Knocking on Heaven’s Door: Six Minor Leaguers in Search of the Baseball Dream (2010, University of Massachusetts Press). In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it a “beautifully written, meticulously orchestrated account of the families, common agents, notable triumphs, and devastating failures of half a dozen talented young men who want to play in the Major Leagues.”
Actively involved in journalism as a columnist for ESPNBoston.com, Dobrow often writes about diversity issues in the world of sports. For many years, he wrote for The Boston Globe. His freelance work has appeared in publications ranging from Sports Illustrated, to ESPN.com (the national site), to The International Herald Tribune. Five of Dobrow’s stories have earned recognition in Houghton Mifflin’s annual Best American Sports Writing series. Among his national writing awards are first-place honors in feature writing from the United States Basketball Writers Association, and in column writing from the Associated Press Sports Editors.
