While security in stadiums and arenas has always been a top priority for event and facility managers, the horrific events of September 11, 2001 thrust this issue to the top of every athletic agenda.
Dr. Matthew Pantera, Chair of the Sport Management & Recreation Department, assembled a team to research this important issue. The research team's hard work and diligence culminated on February 27th when USA TODAY published the Game Day Security Operations Checklist as part of a cover story on sports and terrorism in both their print and online publications. The 16th Annual Weckwerth Lecture - Kevin Gilbride
Here in New England, people love their football. At Springfield College, it is no different. And despite what most Patriot fans think, the New York Giants have had an impact on both. Few have forgotten the amazing upset that took place at Super Bowl XVII, when the 13-6 Giants beat the undefeated New England Patriots. Here on campus, some fans are aware of a link between Springfield's historic football program and the offensive coordinator of the Giants. Although he is now the head coach of the St. Louis Rams, Steve Spagnuolo, a former wide receiver for the Pride in the 1970's, was able to defeat the fan base he was around so much as a student. Spagnuolo's former colleague, Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, has his own past on Springfield gridiron. Click here for the whole story.
