Students From the Sport Management and Recreation Department Help Facilitate 40-year Anniversary Celebration of Rockridge

Rockridge

Springfield College students from the Sport Management and Recreation Department majoring in therapeutic recreation collaborated with alum Beth (Smith) Vettori ’99, executive director of Rockridge Retirement Community, to plan and facilitate the 40-year anniversary celebration of Rockridge.

Students conducted interviews with residents, searched through historical community archives, and planned the details of an evening gala celebration. A video was created using interviews from residents and was unveiled at the event. A historical timeline banner was generated to document significant events at Rockridge through the years. Additional posters were created representing pop culture and society during each decade of the past 40 years.

Special thanks to the Springfield College print shop for partnering with sport management and recreation students to assist with the project.

Student Spotlight: Brian Gogerty

Brian Gogerty Senior Sport Management student Brian Gogerty earned a national bid to officiate at the National Campus Championship Series (NCCS) National Championships, conducted by the National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA), held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., on April 9-11. Brian was selected for the bid by a committee of intramural professionals from NIRSA’s Region One. Out of the 24 student officials, Brian was the only one to receive an automatic bid to officiate at the National Championships. This is the first time a Springfield College student has received this recognition and achievement. Though his competition was stiff, with other student officials coming from Rowan University, University of Rhode Island, University of Connecticut, University of Massachusetts- Amherst, Ithaca College, Northeastern, University of Massachusetts-Lowell, Providence College, and Boston University, Brian received top honors. Congratulations Brian!

Game Day Security
While security in stadiums and arenas has always been a top priority for event and facility managers, the horrific events of September 11, 2001 thrust this issue to the top of every athletic agenda.

Dr. Matthew Pantera, Chair of the Sport Management & Recreation Department, assembled a team to research this important issue. The research team's hard work and diligence culminated on February 27th when USA TODAY published the Game Day Security Operations Checklist as part of a cover story on sports and terrorism in both their print and online publications. The 16th Annual Weckwerth Lecture - Kevin Gilbride

The 16th Annual Weckwerth Lecture Here in New England, people love their football. At Springfield College, it is no different. And despite what most Patriot fans think, the New York Giants have had an impact on both. Few have forgotten the amazing upset that took place at Super Bowl XVII, when the 13-6 Giants beat the undefeated New England Patriots. Here on campus, some fans are aware of a link between Springfield's historic football program and the offensive coordinator of the Giants. Although he is now the head coach of the St. Louis Rams, Steve Spagnuolo, a former wide receiver for the Pride in the 1970's, was able to defeat the fan base he was around so much as a student. Spagnuolo's former colleague, Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, has his own past on Springfield gridiron.
