Stephen Berger

Ph.D. Sociology, Harvard University, 1970. Professor SHS. He is a member of the National Organization for Human Services Education (NOHSE), New England Organization for Human Services Education (NEOHSE), and Folk Education Association of America. He is actively involved as a mediator for an Area Mediation Program, Milford, NH and is a Board Member and Newsletter Editor for New England Organization for Human Services Education.

Ellen Hewett

ABD, Adult Education, Teachers College, Columbia University; MSHS, Human Services Administration, Southern New Hampshire University, 1980; BA, Political Science, McGill University, 1977. Ellen has over 25 years of experience as an adult educator at both administrative and teaching levels. Areas of specialization: community and organizational learning and change, transformational learning, and personal development. She is actively involved in numerous community groups.

Helene Hinis

ABD, English and American Literature, University of Massachusetts; M.A., English Literature, University of Massachusetts, 1984. Areas of specialization: African American Literature, Literatures and Theories of Ethnicity, Feminist Theories and Cultural Studies. Assistant Professor SHS. Won University of Massachusetts’ Distinguished Teaching Award in 1989. Author of three books on writing and articles on feminist theory, race and ethnicity in American literature, and the study of culture. Her book reviews appear regularly in the journal of Multicultural Ethnic Literature of the United States (MELUS). Most recently , she co-authored with Richard Anderson Writing Wrongs! The Springfield College Guide to Clear and Correct Writing.

Paul Levy

D.S.W., 1990, Columbia University School of Social Work; J.D., Georgetown University Law Center. Associate Professor SHS. Prior to his work at SHS, Paul was a community organizer, and lawyer for various poverty and disability groups. He coordinated the School’s MS Degree Program in Sweden for three years. Outside of the school, Paul serves on the New Hampshire Governor’s Commission on Developmental Disabilities and on the Advisory Committee to the American Friends Service Committee of New Hampshire.

Amelia Mallona

Ph. D., Developmental and Educational Psychology, Boston College, 1998. Dissertation Award from The Henry A. Murray Research Center, Radcliffe College, 1996. M.A., in Sociology, University of Missouri, Columbia, 1987. Assistant Professor SHS. Dr. Mallona served as Regional Coordinator of rural social development projects in Nicaragua. She is actively involved in community development in Jamaica Plain, MA.

Marjeanne B. Vacco

Ph.D., Walden University, 1991. Full Professor /SHS and a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LICSW). Dr. Vacco has over 25 years experience as an educator and social work experience at both clinical and administrative levels for over 15 years. Member of National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW). She has taught and acted as discussion leader or resource person at numerous social welfare seminars throughout the Metropolitan Boston Area. She is actively involved in numerous professional and community groups.

SHS employs full-time faculty who are responsible for teaching, service, and scholarship. The SHS practice-oriented curriculum also includes contributions from part-time faculty who are directly involved in agency and community work. The result is that SHS has a faculty with the flexibility, resources and expertise required to address academics as well as new developments in human services practice and delivery.
