Carol E. Mitchell Professor of English and Film Studies B.A., M.A., Ph.D. in English; University of Massachusetts Dr. Mitchell teaches writing and film courses in the Humanities Department at Springfield College. Since arriving in 1975, she served as Department Chair for eleven years and has been the Chair of the William Simpson Fine Art Series for over fifteen years. Dr. Mitchell considers teaching to be her highest professional priority and specializes in courses such as Business and Technical Writing, Film as Narrative Art, Crime Film, Science Fiction Film, Women in Film, and College Writing. She also teaches American Film for SC’s International English Language Institute and leads film discussions for Learning in Later Life participants. In addition, she coordinates and lectures at yearly film festivals at Springfield College. Dr. Mitchell has served as President of the Northeast Regional Popular Culture Association and frequently chairs panels or gives presentations at regional or national conferences. Presentations have included topics on Fargo, The English Patient and The Woman Action Hero in Film. Publications include film and book reviews in NEPCA News and The Jewish Weekly News. Carol Mitchell is also a writing consultant for Western and Central Massachusetts businesses. She has taught effective writing seminars for the Central Massachusetts Employers’ Association as well as a number of area businesses. Having served as President of the Springfield Film Society, annually lecturing for the Joshua Hyde Library Armchair Travelers’ Series, and presently serving as a member of the Sturbridge Cultural Council, Dr. Mitchell is an enthusiastic supporter of the arts.
