Traditions and the Freshman Code

New Students Having Fun The following traditions have previously been upheld and asserted by all upper-class students:
  • Springfield College students extend greetings to every one they meet on campus.
  • Walking on the lawn traditionally involves concern for the appearance on the campus. Care should be taken not to step on the grass close to the sidewalks and not to cut corners so that paths are worn into the turf. To enjoy the green, take a step away from the walks and enjoy the wander.
  • Upper-class students are given preference when choosing residence hall rooms.
  • It is a usual procedure for all students to attempt to support as many campus events as possible
  • Stepping Up Day is held every spring. At this time, each class president receives an appropriate symbol from the president of the next higher class and "steps up" to the next class.

To support and emphasize the College traditions, the following expectations form the code of behavior during orientation. This code has been handed down from class to class. Your active participation and support will help build class spirit and unity.
  • New Student beanies/transfer hats are worn at all times on campus from check-in until Monday, immediately following the closing banquet.
  • Name tags are worn from check-in until immediately following the closing banquet.
  • New students are not to use the Senior Walk during NSO from check-in on Friday through the closing banquet on Monday.
  • In accordance with Springfield College tradition, new students should walk only on paved surfaces on campus. (This excludes the above-mentioned Senior Walk.)
