Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiology is the most established branch of the Movement Sciences. The Exercise Physiology program of Springfield College has a long-standing tradition and prestigious reputation both nationally and internationally. Within the program, students examine the physiological responses of various systems to acute and chronic exercise. This includes the study of neuromuscular function, cardiovascular physiology, the hormonal and biochemical changes associated with exercise, as well as the thermoregulatory responses. Specialty areas such as body composition, patho-physiology and sports nutrition are also addressed.

The exercise physiology concentration is designed to prepare students for basic and applied research activities as well as continued study at the doctoral level.

Exercise Science and Sports Studies Facilities available for research in Exercise Physiology include: a large multi-purpose performance assessment laboratory, a biochemistry laboratory, a computerized hydrostatic weighing facility and a dynamometry laboratory. Research conducted by students focuses primarily on applied human performance. The presentation of student research at regional and/or national scientific meetings along with the publication of research findings is a goal of the graduate experience in Exercise Physiology at Springfield College.

For more information about the graduate programs in exercise physiology, contact Dr. Vincent Paolone (413) 748-3600 or the Graduate Admissions Office at (413) 748-3729.
