Dennis Gildea's Bio

Dennis Gildea is a former news reporter, sportswriter, and sports editor who grew up in a newspaper family. His family published the Coaldale (Pa.) Observer, a weekly for which his uncle, James “Casey” Gildea, wrote virtually everything and his father, Vince Gildea, was the printer. Gildea spent the bulk of his newspaper career covering Penn State sports for the Pennsylvania Mirror and the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa.
Gildea earned a Ph.D. in mass communication at Penn State, and he has been at Springfield College since 1994. He teaches Introduction to Journalism; Sports Information; The Athlete in Literature; the Press in America; Literature of Journalism; Sports, Gambling, and the Media; and the Senior Seminar in Mass Communications. He has had scholarly articles published in American Journalism, Colby Quarterly, International Ski History bulletin, the Dictionary of Literary Biography, African Americans in Sports, and the Berkshire Encyclopedia of World Sport. He is currently engaged in researching and writing about Clair Bee, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the author of the Chip Hilton novels for juvenile readers.
