Guest Speakers

Humanities Speakers We are constantly exposing our students to top sports journalists. Recent on-campus presentations have been made by:

  • Jim Bouton, the former Major League pitcher for the New York Yankees and other teams, was the guest writer at Springfield College's Sport Literature Association Conference in June 2003. Bouton addressed scholars from thorughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, discussing his groundbreaking work Ball Four and his latest book, Foul Ball, published in 2003. Bouton's Ball Four is listed among Sports Illustrated's top 100 books on sport in the 20th century.

  • Jack McCallum of Sports Illustrated

  • Charley Rosen visited Springfield College and read from More Than a Game, a book he co-authored with Los Angeles Lakers's coach Phil Jackson. Rosen, the author of 11 books, also lectured in the Sports Gambling and Media course, focusing on his books Scandals of '51: How the Gamblers Almost Killed College Basketball, Barney Polan's Game; A Novel of the 1951 College Basketball Scandals, and The Wizard of Odds, a biography of master-fixer Jack Molinas.

  • Tony Massarotti of the Boston Herald, a former Massachusetts Sportswriter of the Year.

  • Olympic historian John A. Lucas lectured and spoke to classes at Springfield College on past Olympic Games and future trends in the Olympics and international sport. Lucas, a former track and field coach at Penn State, is the author of Future of the Olympic Games.

  • Bill Reynolds, a columnist and sports reporter for the Providence (R.I.) Journal-Bulletin, visited classes and spoke on his book Fall River Dreams, the story of Chris Herren's senior year at Durfee High School in Fall River, Mass.
