SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE NAMED TO ‘BEST NEIGHBOR’ LIST IN NEW NATIONAL REPORT ON URBAN COLLEGES  Springfield College has been named one of the 25 “best neighbor” urban colleges in the United States in a new report by Evan Dobelle, president of the New England Board of Higher Education.  The “Saviors of Our Cities” list cites colleges for having dramatically strengthened the economy and quality of life in their neighboring community by their careful strategic planning and thoughtful use of resources.  Read more.

SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE TO CO-SPONSOR LECTURE BY TAYLOR BRANCH, AUTHOR OF KING BIOGRAPHY Springfield College will co-sponsor the October 11, 2006, lecture in Symphony Hall by noted historian Taylor Branch, author of a three-volume biography of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The lecture is part of the Springfield Public Forum series of lectures free to the public. Read more.

SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE ANNOUNCES NEW FUNDING TO QUADRUPLE AMERICORPS STUDENTS IN COMMUNITY SERVICE Springfield College announced funding of $3.62 million to more than quadruple its AmeriCorps volunteers beginning this fall.  The Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded Springfield College a $2,623,000 grant to support 125 AmeriCorps students per year for three years.  The college and its partnering organizations will contribute more than an additional $1 million.  Read more.

ANNUAL HUMANICS IN ACTION DAY TO BE HELD Wielding rakes, paint brushes, wheelbarrows, and tutorial equipment, 2,000 Springfield College students, faculty, and staff members will tackle more than 100 projects in the community in a day of concentrated service Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Read more.

FOOTBALL UPSETS NO. 11 UNION COLLEGE, 38-30, IN 2006 SEASON-OPENER Junior quarterback Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) rushed for 268 yards and four TDs, and passed for 107 yards and two more touchdowns in leading the Pride to a 38-30 upset victory over Union College September 9 at Springfield's Benedum Field. CHRIS SHARPE NAMED EMPIRE 8 FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Chris Sharpe has been named the Empire 8 Football Offensive Player of the Week as a result of his record-setting performance last Saturday night during SC's upset 38-30 victory over 11th-ranked Union College at Benedum Field. MEN'S SOCCER BATTLES NO. 3 PLATTSBURGH STATE TO 0-0 DRAW IN CARDINAL CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Junior forward Colin Cook (Wilbraham, Mass.) was named the Cardinal Classic's Most Offensive Player as the Pride battled host and third-ranked SUNY Plattsburgh to a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes of soccer September 10 in the championship match of the 2006 Cardinal Classic.
