FREE GIRLS SPORTS CLINICS AT SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE FOR NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY Getting a head start on National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), Springfield College coaches and student athletes will conduct free clinics for girls in grades three through eight in softball, gymnastics, tennis, yoga, rock climbing, and leadership games Saturday, Jan. 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Physical Education Complex, on the campus.   Registration information.

CHRIS SHARPE EARNS JOSEPH P. ZABILSKI AWARD Junior quarterback Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) has been selected winner of the Joseph P. Zabilski Award by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston for the 2006 season. Read more.

AIDS EDUCATOR PERNESSA SEELE CHARLESTON CAMPUS SPEAKER Pernessa C. Seele, a pioneer in mobilizing faith communities in the fight against AIDS/HIV affecting African people worldwide, spoke at commencement ceremonies for the Charleston Campus of the Springfield College School of Human Services (SHS) on January 5, when the college awarded 67 bachelor's and master's degrees in human services in ceremonies at the Mt. Moriah Family Life Center, in North Charleston, S.C. Read more.

COLLEGE HOSTS HOOPHALL CLASSIC More than 9,000 fans and 40 teams visited campus when Springfield College hosted the 2007 Basketball Hall of Fame Spalding Hoophall Classic. Also attending the four-day event were coaches and recruiters from more than 75 colleges. Nine of USA Today's Top 25 Teams and 20 of the nation's top 100 players were featured at this event, with more than 100 future Division 1 players participating. There were a total of 16 states represented, including schools from California, Texas, Georgia, Arizona, Virginia, and Maryland. Springfield College students from the Office of Special Programs and the Department of Sport Management were involved in team hospitality and event logistics.

COLLEGE'S SERVICE MISSION OF INTEREST AT HOLIDAYS Springfield College gained national interest in its service mission this past December when a story on holiday volunteerism appeared on the Web sites of Reuters, Forbes, and Yahoo, as well as nearly twenty radio stations in a number of states.  Miguel L. Arce, assistant professor of social work, and Charlene Elvers, director of student volunteer programs, discussed holiday volunteering as the start of an ongoing positive addiction.  Read more. JUNIOR QUARTERBACK CHRIS SHARPE FEATURED IN JANUARY 18 ISSUE OF SPORTS ILLUSTRATED "FACES IN THE CROWD" SECTION Read more.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS BY 20 AT MIT; EVENS UP RECORD AT 3-3 IN NEWMAC PLAY A 13-5 run by the Springfield College women's basketball team during the final six minutes thwarted a late rally by MIT as the Pride went on to pick up a 65-45 win in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on January 20. MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS ONE ON THE ROAD TO WPI, 76-56 The WPI men's basketball team earned its eleventh consecutive victory of the 2006-07 campaign on January 20, as it defeated NEWMAC-rival Springfield College, 76-56, at Harrington Auditorium. Read more.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL WINS SECOND STRAIGHT; DEFEATS ENDICOTT COLLEGE, 3-1 Springfield College entered the January 20 match-up with Endicott ranked fifth in the most recent CSTV/AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Poll, and the Pride did not disappoint, winning three games to one. Read more.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING BOTH FALL AT WILLIAMS The Springfield College men's and women's swimming & diving teams both fell to perennially strong Williams College on January 20 in Williamstown. Read more.

MEN'S GYMNASTICS FALLS TO ARMY IN THE 2007 SEASON OPENER Army's Mike Assenmacher captured the all-around to lead his men's gymnastics team to victory over Springfield College by a score of 203.300 to 186.750 on January 20 at Blake Arena. Read more.

WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS SPLITS IN TRI-MEET AT SUNY BROCKPORT WITH WILSON COLLEGE SC freshman Audrey Lastra (New Milford, Conn.) finished second overall in the all-around competition with a final score of 35.850 points to lead the Pride in its win over Wilson College (180.650-150.800) and loss to Brockport State (182.475-180.650) in a tri-meet on January 21. February 17, Bradenton, Fla. The Suncoast Alumni Association Annual Meeting and Luncheon at the Rosedale Golf and Country Club in Bradenton, Fla., with guest speaker Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn.

March 4, Ft. Myers, Fla. Annual Twins vs. Red Sox spring training game and pre-game picnic at Hammond Stadium. Special guest is Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn.

March 8, Milwaukee, Wis., Campus Join Richard D. Davila, Ph.D., Professor of Human Services and 2006-2007 Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics, in honoring 40 Years of the Springfield College Tradition: The Springfield Professor of Humanics. Dr. Ed Sims '51, Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics Emeritus and Professor of English Emeritus, will be a special guest.  

March 11, Jupiter, Fla. World Champion St. Louis Cardinals vs. Atlanta Braves at Roger Dean Stadium.  Event sponsored by the Florida East Coast Alumni Association, with special guests Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn and Cardinals Head Trainer Barry Weinberg '73.

March 15, Baltimore, Md. AAHPERD Convention Social for SC alumni from 7-9 p.m. at the Renaissance Inner Harbor Hotel.  The social is sponsored by the Baltimore/Washington Alumni Association, and hosted by Dr. William J. Considine, dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

March 22, Hyannis, Mass. The Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association convention reception, at Sheraton Four Points Resort, at noon.

AMA PRESIDENT-ELECT TO ADDRESS STUDENTS Dr. Ronald M. Davis, president-elect of the American Medical Association (AMA), will speak to Springfield College students who are preparing for careers in health and medicine Wednesday, January 31, at 10 a.m., in Appleton Auditorium, Fuller Arts Center.

MORGAN CLASSIC TO FEATURE TOP COLLEGIATE VOLLEYBALL TEAMS Top collegiate volleyball teams will compete in the 20^th Annual Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic in Blake Arena.  On February 9, Ball State takes on Rutgers University at 6 p.m., and the University of California, San Diego will face Springfield College at 8 p.m. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for February 10, at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively. SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE WINTER/SPRING ARTS EVENTS: THEATRE, DANCE, JAZZ CONCERT, POETRY, ART EXHIBITIONS A theatrical look at heroes of the Civil Rights Movement, a comedic dance play, a performance by a popular jazz quintet, readings by leading area poets, student theatre, and art exhibitions will be among events in Springfield College’s winter/spring William Simpson Fine Arts Series of visual and performing arts events open to the public.
