BABSON PARK, Mass. - November 3, 2007 - The Springfield College men's soccer team's season came to a close on Saturday afternoon as the Pride was defeated by Babson, 4-1, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Tim Winn scored two goals to break his own single-season record as the second-seeded Babson College Beavers defeated the third-seeded Springfield College Pride, 4- at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the win, Babson (12-5-2) advances to Sunday's championship game, where the Beavers will face top-seeded Wheaton College at 1 p.m. Springfield sees its season come to a close with a record of 9-8-2.
Babson took the lead less than five minutes into the game, as senior Chris Schwartz knocked in a rebound of junior Brendan McNamara's shot that was tipped off the crossbar by senior goalie BJ Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) at 4:20. Springfield then tied the game midway through the half when sophomore Adrian Schippers (Ashby, Mass.) cut back across the defense and fired a shot from 20 yards out into the lower left corner at 28:30.
The Beavers moved in front for good in the 32nd minute, when Winn took a lead pass from sophomore Dan Fogarty down the left side, made a move on Sturdivant, and scored from the left side of the box at 31:45. The Babson All-American then made it 3-1 when he cut back across the defense and ripped a shot off the right post and in from the top of the box at 48:11. It was Winn's second of the day and league-leading 17th of the season. Senior Jonny Hakala later scored on a shot from the right side at 57:11, as Babson came away with the 4-1 victory.
Senior captain Chris Necklas finished with three saves in net for Babson, while Sturdivant turned away two shots in goal for Springfield.
