SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - November 5, 2007 - After guiding the Springfield College field hockey team to its fourth-straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament title on Sunday, Jill Urtz has been named the NEWMAC Player of the Week.
The Verona, N.Y. native anchored the Pride's defense that allowed just one goal in three tournament games over the past week. The Pride, who allowed just one goal in three tournament games, was paced by the outstanding play of Urtz, the team's left back. Urtz was able to shut down some of the league's most potent offensive players as well as limiting opponents shots with her work defensivley on penalty corners. The Pride posted a shutout in the championship contest, beating Wellesley 3-0, for the NEWMAC crown. It was the Pride's 10th shutout of the season.
The Pride opens up NCAA Tournament play this Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 7) when it entertains King's College at 5:00 p.m. on Stagg Field.
