Michael Smith Named To Verizon All-Academic District One Team
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 22, 2003 – Springfield College junior gymnast Michael Smith was selected to the 2002-03 Verizon Academic District One College Division Men’s At-Large Second Team, announced today.
Smith, who hails from Salt Lake City, Utah, is a business management major with a 3.82 grade- point average (g.p.a.). Smith helped the Pride to a fifth-place finish at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championship (April 19) by earning All-America honors on the floor exercise. He was a USA Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete and qualified for the 2003 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships. Smith also placed third in the all-around, and fifth on the vault to propel the Pride to the New England Championship (March 9).
To be eligible for the Verizon Academic All-District I team, a student-athlete must play at a Division II or III institution based in New England or New York. The student-athlete must have a minimum 3.2 g.p.a. and be a starter or significant reserve on his team. The team is voted on by the sports information directors of those institutions.
The At-Large Team consists of athletes in the sports of women’s crew, gymnastics, skiing, men’s volleyball, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, wrestling, golf, and rifle.
