Wellesley College Hands No. 15 Field Hockey its First NEWMAC Loss, 2-1

Boxscore

WELLESLEY, Mass., October 21, 2006 – The Wellesley College field hockey team turned in a strong second-half performance on Saturday to defeat visiting Springfield College for the first time since 2002. With the win, Wellesley improves to 12-3 and has handed the Pride its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) loss of the season.

The teams traded shots throughout a tense first half of quick possession changes and heavy pressure at both ends of the field. Emily Hewitt made four saves for the Blue to keep the game scoreless going into the break.

The second frame got off to a fast start as Lydia Parzych scored in the game’s 41st minute, assisted by Sara Stein off a penalty corner. Hewitt followed with three quick saves to preserve the lead, building momentum for the Blue, and Callie Lekas found the net 90 seconds later to score the eventual game-winner.

SC got on the board when junior forward Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) knocked a slow roller into the right corner of the net in the 47th minute. The Blue recovered to keep the pressure on throughout the final minutes, maintaining a quick pace until the clock ran out.

Hewitt stopped 12 shots for Wellesley, while junior Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) made 13 saves for the Pride.

SC ends its 2006 NEWMAC regular-season with a 7-1 record and 13-4 overall mark, as Wellesley is now 6-1 in league play. If the Blue defeats Babson College on Tuesday, October 24th, then Wellesley would earn the right to host the NEWMAC Tournament from Saturday, October 28th, to Sunday, November 5th. The Pride will next play at Plymouth State on Tuesday afternoon, October 24th, in a 3:00 p.m. start.
