Women's Soccer Falls to Amherst College, 2-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 19, 2006 – The Lord Jeffs of Amherst College netted two first-half goals en route to a 2-0 shutout against Springfield College tonight. Amherst remains perfect this season, improving its record to 4-0, while the Pride drops to 4-2 overall.

The Lord Jeffs struck twice in the first half. After Amherst strikers bounced four shots off the goal post, senior forward Amy Armstrong connected on a pass from junior Katie Coffey at the 23:03 mark. Just three minutes later (26:13), Amherst scored again off the foot of sophomore Stephanie Yesnik. Lesley Pruzansky was credited with the assist.

The Lord Jeffs maintained control throughout the match, holding a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. While Springfield College managed a few fast break opportunities, the Pride could not capitalize on its solo shot on goal.

Starting goalkeeper for Amherst, Piper Crowell, tallied one save and recorded her second shutout this season in 78 minutes of play. Back-up keeper Lili Ferguson came into the match with 12 minutes left in regulation and did not have to make a save.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) put aside four saves for the Pride, but allowed both of Amherst's scores. Her season record drops to 2-1.

Springfield College opens up its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition on Friday evening, September 22nd. The team travels to Worcester, Mass., to face Clark University at 7:00 p.m.
