

ITHACA, N.Y., November 5, 2006--The Springfield College wrestling team competed in their first match of the 2006-07 season this past weekend at the Ithaca Invitational, finishing sixth out of 17 teams. Three SC wrestlers had great performances, competing in the finals in each of the 157-, 174- and 197-lbs. weight classes.
Senior Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken), junior Jake Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur) and junior Elliot Smith (Richville, N.Y./Gouverneur) propelled SC to a sixth place team finish with second place finishes of their own in their particular weight classes.
DeCiccio made it to the final by defeating Dan Dicolo of The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in an 8-7 hard-fought match. DeCiccio’s attempt at a championship ended though in the final against Dicolo’s teammate Joe Galante in a match that ended 11-7. Jake Tyler, the #1 seed in the 174 lb. weight class, was victorious in a couple of hard-fought matches to make it to the final, where he eventually lost to third-seeded Greg Osgoodby of TCNJ by pin 3:19 into the match. Lastly, Smith, the #2-seed in the 197-lb. weight class, also made it to the final where he was defeated by #1-seed Phil Archer of Cortland State.
The Pride as a team finished sixth with 98 total points in this competitive Division III tournament. The College of New Jersey finished first with 145 points, while Johnson & Wales and Cortland State finished second and third with 136.50 and 135 points.
SC, recently ranked #2 in the New England Division III pre-season coaches poll, will compete in their second tournament of the year on Sunday, November 12 at The College of New Jersey.
Former Springfield College All-American Daryl Arroyo will be entering his 19th season as the head wrestling coach at his alma mater in 2008-09. Under his tutelage, the Springfield College wrestling program has posted a 265-141-6 overall dual-meet record, good for an outstanding .650 winning percentage.
