SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 6, 2006 - Springfield College senior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Co-Player of the Week in men’s basketball for the week ending on February 4th. It is the second time this season that Yvon has garnered this weekly honor.
Yvon, a graduate of Cathedral High School, led the Pride in a 2-0 week with wins at MIT (Jan. 31) and home against Wheaton College (Feb. 4). In the 62-56 victory over MIT, Yvon scored a team-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds in 33 minutes of play. In SC’s big 84-65 win against the Lyons on Saturday night, the senior co-captain led all scorers with a season-best 32 points on impressive shooting from the floor. In all, Yvon went 12-for-21 from the floor, while connecting on five of his nine three-point field goal attempts, and all three of his free throws.
For the week, Yvon averaged 24.5 points per game (ppg) and 6.0 rebounds per game (rpg) as he shares the award with WPI sophomore forward Antoine Coleman. In the two wins, Yvon went 18-for-41 (44.0%) from the floor, 6-for-17 (35.3%) from beyond the arc, and 7-for-8 (87.5%) from the charity stripe.
With his 32-point performance against Wheaton, Yvon is now just 28 points away from becoming SC’s all-time career leader, as he has accumulated 1,976 career points to date. For the time being, Hassan Robinson (’95) is the career leader at Springfield College with 2,003 points.
The Pride (8-13, 3-5 NEWMAC), which has won three consecutive games, will host Clark University on Tuesday evening, February 7, in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in the second game of a Springfield College basketball doubleheader. The women host non-conference foe, Amherst College, at 5:30 p.m.
