Springfield, Mass. – February 19, 2008 – Tara McCarthy has been chosen as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week in women's basketball after she led the Pride to a pair of wins in NEWMAC play this past week.
The Bristol, R.I. native averaged 19 points per game in a pair of contests as she shot 56.5% from the field (13-23), connected on 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. She also averaged 6.0 rebounds per game to go along with a total of eight assists and four steals.
McCarthy tallied 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals as the Pride cruised past Mount Holyoke, 74-47, on Wednesday. Then on Saturday, McCarthy's game-high 24 points moved her into fourth place on the Springfield all-time scoring list. She went 8-of-11 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line, as she also added five rebounds and three assists in Springfield's 79-64 win over Clark.
To date, the senior guard has netted 1,316 points. With her 24 points against Clark, McCarthy passed Sharon Playdon (1981-1984), who tallied 1,313 points in her career. McCarthy now needs 69 points to move into third place, currently held by Donna Masterson (1994-1998), who netted 1,384 points.
