No. 8 Wrestling Wins Eighth NECCWA Title In Nine Years

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Springfield College sophomore All-American
Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.) and sophomore
Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I.) won individual titles to lead the No. 8 Pride to its eighth New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Championship in nine years, Sunday, at Johnson & Wales University. All 10 SC wrestlers placed in the top-six of their respective weight classes to earn All-New England honors.

Brian Viglione (Chelmsford, Mass.) will represent SC at the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday-Saturday, March 4-5 at St. Olaf College in Minnesota.
SC won the meet with 128.5 points, followed by the hosts Wildcats (116), Rhode Island College (87), Norwich (83) and Williams (70) rounding out the top five of the 15-team field.
Gaeta won his second-straight 141-pound title, sweeping five-straight matches, including a 45-second pin in the championship final over second-seeded Luke Emmons from Rhode Island College. DeCiccio also swept five matches en route to the 149-pound title.
Viglione finished second in the 174-pound weight class, but received a wild card for the second-straight season to the NCAA Championships.

Former Springfield College All-American Daryl Arroyo will be entering his 19th season as the head wrestling coach at his alma mater in 2008-09. Under his tutelage, the Springfield College wrestling program has posted a 265-141-6 overall dual-meet record, good for an outstanding .650 winning percentage.
