SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- May 9, 2008 -- Mike Miller, a senior at Springfield College, is the leader of the decathlon event at the New England Open Division Men's Track & Field Championships at the University of New Hampshire in Durham after Day 1 of competition.
A native of Storrs, Conn., Miller established a personal best with a halfway mark of 3,579 points, far better than his previous best of 3,481 points set at Holy Cross just three weeks ago. In this meet, Miller is 236 poiints ahead of his nearest competitor, James Spaulding of Southern Maine, who has 3,343 points after the first day.
Miler did very well in each event, including the shot put and the high jump in which he finished first. His day began with a personal best time of 11.52 seconds in the 100 meter dash. He then long-jumped 20-feet, 10-inches. He then won the shot put with a toss of 42-1 1/2. He followed that up by winning the high jump at 6-5 1/2. Finally, in very windy conditions, he ran a 51.78 in his closing event, the 400.
