



SPRINGFIELD, Mass., November 1, 2005 – Springfield College senior opposite Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and junior middle blocker MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) each totaled 10 kills as the No. 2 Pride swept No. 7 Clark University, 3-0 (30-13, 30-19, 30-12), in the first round of the 2005 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Volleyball Tournament this evening (Nov. 1) in Blake Arena.
SC (26-7) advances to face third-seeded Coast Guard on Friday night, November 4, in a 7:30 p.m. semifinal match-up at MIT, after Coast Guard defeated No. 6 Wheaton College (3-0). In other first round action tonight, No. 1 MIT swept No. 8 WPI, as MIT has earned the right to host the Semifinals and Finals this weekend, and No. 4 Smith College downed No. 5 Wellesley College, 3-1.
To go along with her game-high 10 kills, Reves also recorded 11 digs in the match, as did junior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.). Senior setter Alesia Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) compiled a team-best 29 assists in the quarterfinal victory, whereas junior outside hitter Nicole Curtin (Beacon, N.Y.) had a team-high three service aces to go along with six kills. Junior outside hitter Jody Pfeifer (Northglenn, Colo.) added seven kills in the match.
Clark University (10-18) was led by senior captain Kara Scimeca, who totaled a team-high 13 digs while adding three kills and one service ace. Cougar senior outside hitter Abida Hassan added seven kills.


Moira Long will enter her first season as head women's volleyball coach in the fall of 2011. With over 300 victories as a Division III women's volleyball coach, Long will continue Springfield's proud tradition as one of the top programs in the country.
