No. 2 Field Hockey Cruises Past No. 3 Wheaton College, 4-1, in NEWMAC Tournament Semifinal

WELLESLEY, Mass., November 4, 2006 – The Springfield College field hockey team defeated Wheaton College, 4-1, this afternoon in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinal match-up. The win puts the Pride in tomorrow’s championship game in an attempt to defend its title against host Wellesley College.

Junior forward Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) had a hand in all four SC goals, finishing with three scores and an assist. She netted the first off an assist from sophomore forward Allie Eisele (Walton, N.Y.) in the 22nd minute to get the Pride on the board. Sophomore forward Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) added a goal on a Veazie assist in the 33rd minute to give SC a 2-0 advantage after the first half.

Veazie continued her offensive assault in the second half, tallying two unassisted goals to push the Pride total to four. Shea Clarke netted Wheaton’s lone goal on a penalty stroke in the 56th minute of action.

Junior goalkeepers Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H.) split time in the net for SC, combining for seven saves, and Mary Catherine Boll recorded 12 saves for Wheaton.

The Pride and Wellesley will play for the NEWMAC title Sunday afternoon, November 5th, at 1:00 p.m. in Wellesley.
