Football Still No. 1 in the New England Division III Coaches Poll

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 9, 2006 – The 5-0 Springfield College football team has been ranked No. 1 in New England again this week in the season’s fourth New England Division III Coaches poll, released Monday. SC has also been ranked No. 1 in the first three polls of 2006.

SC further strengthened its hold on first place this week. Last week, Springfield accumulated 11 first-place votes (out of 14). But this week, SC recorded 14 first-place votes (out of 17). Overall, SC amassed 167 points, while secon-place Williams College (3-0) has 141 (and one first-place vote). Curry (6-0) remained third with 136 points and the other two first-place votes.

In addition, SC has been ranked 22nd nationally (same as a week ago) by D3football.com.

1) Springfield (5-0) 167 points (14 first-place votes)
2) Williams (3-0) 141 ( 1 first-place vote)
3) Curry (6-0) 136 ( 2 first-place votes)

Head Coach Mike DeLong Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 27th season as a head football coach in the fall of 2008. He enters his 25th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 24 years (1984 through 2007, inclusive), he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
