Courtney Parvin Named NEWMAC Player of the Week For Second Time This Season

Senior forward Courtney Parvin has been named the NEWMAC Player of the Week for the second time this season after helping guide SC to its second-straight NEWMAC Tournament Championship.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 27, 2006 - Springfield College senior forward Courtney Parvin (Brackney, Pa.) has been named this week’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, in an announcement made by the conference on Monday afternoon, February 27.

Parvin, a graduate of Montrose Area High School, had an excellent week for the Pride as SC put together a 3-0 week en route to winning its fifth NEWMAC Tournament in the past six years. In three tournament games, the senior co-captain averaged 17.3 points per game (ppg), 6.3 rebounds per game (rpg), 3.6 assists and 3.3 steals, while shooting 47.5 percent from the floor (19-40), an even 40 percent from three-point range (2-5), and 85.7 percent from the free throw line (12-14).

In an 82-44 victory over Wellesley in the quarterfinals (Feb. 21), Parvin poured in 24 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. In the Pride’s 81-62 semifinal victory over Clark University (Feb. 25), the Brackney, Pa., native registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four steals and three assists. In SC’s hard-fought win over Mount Holyoke in the title game (57-51), Parvin added 11 points, five boards, three steals and two rebounds.

Parvin, a NEWMAC Player of the Year candidate, is averaging 15.2 ppg this season as she has moved into fifth place on SC’s all-time scoring list. Earlier this season, Parvin became just the tenth women’s basketball player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point barrier.

The Pride earned its second-straight NCAA Division III Tournament berth on Sunday with the 57-51 win over Mount Holyoke. SC, which is now 22-6 overall on the season, will play at Messiah (Pa.) College in the first round on Friday night, March 3, in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
