



SPRINGFIELD, Mass., -- Sept. 7, 2005- Springfield College junior MaryKathryn O’Neil has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Player of the Week. O’Neil is just the second SC women’s volleyball athlete to garner such an honor, and the first since Kerri Camuso back on October 9, 1995.
O’Neil, from Liverpool, N.Y., earned this prestigious national honor after being named the tournament MVP at this past weekend’s SC Invitational. O’Neil, who was also tabbed as the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week, led the Pride to a 4-0 record as SC went a perfect 12-0 in total games played. The middle blocker from West Genesee High School compiled a .450 hitting percentage on 80 attacks during the Invitational while averaging 4.96 points, 3.67 kills, 1.50 blocks, 0.67 digs and 0.33 aces per game.
O’Neil collected 20 kills with a .643 hitting percentage and added three blocks and two aces against Roger Williams on Sept. 3. The 5-11 junior had 12 kills, five blocks and two aces while hitting .450 versus Rhode Island on Sept. 2. She provided a balanced attack on Sept. 3 versus Brandeis with seven kills, six blocks and five digs.
The Pride will next travel to the Johnson & Wales Invitational this weekend from September 9-10. SC will play Suffolk University in its opening match of the Invitational on Friday (Sept. 9) at 4:00 p.m.


Moira Long will enter her first season as head women's volleyball coach in the fall of 2011. With over 300 victories as a Division III women's volleyball coach, Long will continue Springfield's proud tradition as one of the top programs in the country.
