AMHERST, Mass. -- September 18, 2007 -- Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal 15 seconds into the second overtime session to propel the No. 23 Springfield College women's soccer team past Amherst, 2-1, on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Pride move to 6-1 while Amherst falls to 1-2-2. It was the first win over the Lord Jeffs since 2001 and the first time the Pride had found the back of the cage since 2003.

Nicole Hanewich (Cumberland, R.I.) gave the Pride an early 1-0 lead when she buried a shot from 22 yards out into far upper corner just 11:30 into the contest. Hanewich took advantage of some sloppy Amherst passing in the backfield, as she was able to steal the ball and dribble toward the right side of the goal. Hanewich chipped a shot to the far post, lofting the ball over Amherst goalkeeper Lili Ferguson, who was unable to get back to her line in time. The goal increased Hanewich’s season total to a team-high six.

Amherst came out of the gate strong and took less than four minutes to tie the game, as the Jeffs earned a corner kick at the 41-minute mark. The long cross was cleared by the Springfield defense, but right to the feet of Murphy, who sent a hard shot low and to the corner of the goal. But Springfield goalie Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) got a late jump on the ball because she was screened by a wall of players from both teams, and Murphy’s well-placed shot snuck past the outstretched hands of the Springfield goalie, tying the game at 1-1.

The first extra frame flew by without any serious scoring chances for either side, but it only took the Pride 15 seconds in the second frame to bring the game to a halt. Peltier took a shot from 25 yards out, once again catching Ferguson slightly off her line, as the ball hit the bottom half of the crossbar and bounced into the goal, causing the Pride to rush the field in celebration of their 2-1 victory.

Springfield was limited to just six shots in the game, three of which came in the overtime sessions. The Pride were outshot 21-3 throughout the first two halves.

Jenney was outstanding in goal throughout the match and made eight saves in goal to earn her sixth win of the season.

The Pride return to action on Saturday evening when it hosts NEWMAC-rival Clark at 7:00 p.m.
