Women's Volleyball Falls in 3-1 Decision at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, CONN., October 3, 2006 - Springfield College senior tri-captains MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) had 12 kills and 23 digs, respectively, but it was the Coast Guard Academy which upended the Pride, 3-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match this evening.

Coast Guard (10-2, 4-1 NEWMAC) junior co-captain Corinne McCormack had 22 kills, 12 digs and four aces, while sophomore Nicole Gurr added 21 kills and four aces in leading the Bears to its sixth straight win.

In game one with the score tied 25-25, Coast Guard scored five of the final six points, including the game-winner on an ace by junior Kimberly Jung, for a 30-26 win.

The Pride evened the match by winning game two, 30-27, before the Bears jumped out to a 13-4 lead in game three en route to a 30-14 win.

Coast Guard closed out the match by scoring four of the final five points for a 30-25 win. Jung added 13 kills, nine digs and four aces for the Bears.

SC falls to 13-4 overall on the season and 3-2 in conference action as it will next host the 2006 Tom Hay Invitational on Saturday, October 7th, in Blake Arena.
