SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 6, 2007) -- Ryan Hingston went 2-for-3 and knocked in three runs to lead the Springfield College baseball team to a 12-1 victory over Elms College at SC’s very cold Berry-Allen Field this afternoon on a cloudy, overcast day. When the game ended at 6 p.m., the temperature was 34 degrees. The wind chill made it feel like 28 degrees.

With the win, Springfield is now 4-13 overall, although it is the Pride’s second victory in a row. The Blazers are now 3-10-1, and have extended their losing streak to five.

It was a 0-0 game entering the bottom of the fourth. With one out, SC junior rightfielder Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.) doubled to right. With two outs, junior first baseman Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.) hit a soft liner over the pitcher’s head that did not make it out of the infield grass for a single, advancing Cone to third. But that opened the floodgates. Senior left-fielder Josh Charpentier (Fairhaven, Mass.) then singled to right, knocking in the first run. Senior DH Doug Maier (Long Valley, N.J.) then doubled in a second run. Sophomore second baseman Drew Michael (Longmeadow, Mass.) singled sharply to score two more runs. And finally Hingston, a junior third baseman from Windsor, Vt., tripled home the inning’s fifth run. All five runs scored with two outs.

In the fifth inning, SC tacked on five more. Federico singled in the first two runs. Maier knocked in the third with a double. And then with two outs, Hingston singled in two more.

SC scored once in the sixth inning on an RBI-single by reserve sophomore first baseman Ryan Tatreau (Greenfield, Mass.), making it 11-0.

Elms scored an unearned run in the top half of the seventh without benefit of a hit. An error and two walks loaded the bases. Freshman second baseman Eric Stawarz (Chicopee, Mass.) plated the run with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Pride scored once more in the seventh inning on an RBI-single by senior center-fielder Chris Stack (Albany, N.Y.).

Seven Springfield pitchers allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out 10 batters and walking three. Junior lefthander Joe Carlos (Wilbraham, Mass.) got the start and pitched a scoreless two innings. Elms went hitless from the third through seventh innings. The winner was senior right-hander Derek Hodder (Hamden, Conn.), who pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning for the Pride. Hodder is now 2-2.

The loser was freshman right-hander Matt Josefs (Newington, Conn.), now 0-2. Josefs went 4 1/3, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. He walked one and struck out none.

Springfield will now have a rare weekend off. Its next game will be at MCLA on Monday (April 9) at 3:30 p.m. The Pride will then resume NEWMAC play at Coast Guard Tuesday (April 10) at 3:30 p.m.
