CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 26, 2005 -- Springfield College junior forward Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Pride past MIT, 12-9, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s lacrosse this afternoon in Cambridge, Mass.
MIT took a 1-0 lead 27 seconds into the game, but two-straight Looney goals put the Pride ahead, 2-1, with 25:55 to play in the first half.
The Engineers tied the game 27 seconds later, before a four-goal run by the Pride, capped by a Carmody tally, gave SC a commanding 6-2 lead with 19:28 remaining in the half.
The teams would finish the half with two more goals apiece, including back-to-back scores by sophomore forward Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.), as SC led, 8-4, after 30 minutes of play.
The Engineers cut the lead to two, 8-6, on consecutive goals by senior Kelsey Presson with 28:25 remaining in the second half. The teams would trade goals to make it a 9-7 game with 24:52 left to play.
Two-straight MIT goals made it a one-goal game, 10-9, with 14:19 left to play, but tallies by sophomore forward Heidi Eidse (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) and Carmody down the stretch led SC to a win in its conference opener.
The Pride opens its home schedule on Wednesday, March 30 hosting Amherst College in non-conference action at 7:00 p.m.
