Women's Lacrosse Defeats Wellesley, 18-5, for Fifth Win In A Row
WELLESLEY, Mass., April 3, 2004 – Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) tallied five goals and dished out two assists to lead Springfield College to a commanding 18-5 win over Wellesley in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference
women’s lacrosse game Saturday at Wellesley.
With the win SC improves to 3-0 in the conference and 5-1 overall while Wellesley remains
winless in its first five games of the season to stand at 0-5 overall and
0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Looney was one of five SC players to score at least two goals in
the win as Libby Beinert (Willston, Vt.) added three goals and Erin Smith
(Longmeadow, Mass.), Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) and Melissa Pond
(Wayland, Mass.) each chipped in with two goals apiece.
Shannah Paddock (Dayton, Ohio) made six saves in goal for the Pride.
SC took a commanding 11-3 heading into the break on the heels
Beinert’s two first-half goals. Wellesley led early in the game as Laura
Bender scored a break-away goal less than a minute
into the action, connecting on a tricky wrap-around shot for the first of
her two goals in the game. Wellesley’s lead would be short-lived however
as the Pride would rattle off the next seven goals of the game,
including a three goal spurt in a less than a minute of action, to take a
7-1 lead with 16:54 to play in the first half.
Dawn Kim snapped Wellesley’s scoring draught finishing
a free-position shot with 16:05 remaining to cut the Springfield lead to
7-2, but the Pride would answer right back with another three-goal run as
Spring Silverman (Huntington Valley, Pa.), Erin Smith
and Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) each tallied goals, giving
SC a 10-2 cushion with 10 minutes left in the half.
Casey Logan would score Wellesley’s final goal of the
half with 1:23 on the clock to cut the lead to 10-3, but SC would
tally the final score of the half with just 12 seconds to go as Melissa
Pond beat Wellesley’s Ashleigh Korves over the top.
SC opened the second half with back-to-back goals from Smith and
Beinert to take a 10-goal lead at 13-3 before Wellesley’s Logan tallied a
goal on a free position shot with 16:20 remaining in the game to cut the
lead to nine at 13-4. The Pride stormed right back however on three
straight goals from Looney for a commanding 16-4 lead to seal the win.
