COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., May 24, 2004 – The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) announced that Springfield College’s Leyla Williams earned one of its All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete-of-the-Year Awards.
These awards are given to student-athletes who are dedicated to the field of strength and conditioning. This year, the NSCA honored 186 student-athletes from 80 schools. The NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year Award program is in its 21st year, and is made possible by a grant from Power Systems.
Williams, a senior from Unionville, N.Y., placed second in the hammer throw at the 2003 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She also qualified for NCAA Division III Championships last season and was sixth in the preliminaries. In 2004, Williams was a Division III All-England selection during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
“Leyla has been a very successful hammer thrower,” said Dr. Margaret Jones, director of Springfield College’s strength and conditioning program. “Her hard work and dedication have resulted in all-conference and all-New England honors. She’s also a national qualifier in the hammer.”
Robert Jursnick, NSCA’s Executive Director, added, “The advantages of strength training and conditioning cannot be denied in collegiate athletics. These student-athletes attest to this understanding, and are to be applauded for their hard work and dedication.”
Under the direction of Dr. Jones, Springfield College has one the nation’s top strength and conditioning programs. In April, SC was one of just 47 programs recognized by the NSCA for its proactive efforts in providing students with the education needed to be successful in the exercise and sport science fields. Graduates of SC’s strength and conditioning program have gone onto work with top professional organizations, including the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Lakers, as well as major colleges such as the University of Texas and Syracuse University.
