SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 20, 2005 – Springfield College senior opposite Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) recorded a team-best 20 kills to go along with 17 digs as the Pride defeated Coast Guard, 3-2 (27-30, 18-30, 30-25, 30-21, 16-14), in come-from-behind fashion this evening (Sept. 20) in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s volleyball five-game thriller.
With SC down 2-0 early in the match (27-30, 18-30), the Pride started to mount its comeback as Springfield responded by winning games three and four, 30-25 and 30-21, respectively. The fifth and decisive game was close the entire way, as there were eight ties between the two squads.
Towards the end of that fifth game, Coast Guard took a 14-12 advantage and appeared to have the match under control. SC showed its resiliency once again, as junior Rachael Witte (Utica, N.Y.) came up with a huge block on Coast Guard freshman Nicole Gurr to tie the game at 14 apiece. Witte’s block would be all that Jessica Baldwin (Rochester, N.Y.) needed, as the freshmen made two great serves (one ace) to win the match for SC. Witte compiled eight blocks in the match for SC.
Joining Reves in double-digit kills tonight were juniors Jody Pfeifer (Northglenn, Colo.), who had 12, and MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.), who contributed with 10. Senior setter Alesia Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) tallied an impressive 52 assists for the 10-1 Pride (3-0 NEWMAC), and junior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) added a team-high 21 digs.
Coast Guard (5-2, 2-1 NEWMAC) was led by Nicole Gurr who had an impressive 36 kills in the match for the Bears. Sophomore Corinne McCormack added a team-best 26 digs to go along with 12 kills.
The Pride remains perfect in the NEWMAC (3-0, 10-1 overall) as it will next travel to Worcester, Mass., for the MIT Invitational this weekend, on Friday and Saturday, September 23-24.
