Men's Soccer Drops a 2-1 Decision at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - September 8, 2007 - The Springfield College men's soccer team held Salve Regina to just a dozen shots in the game. The Pride, however, lost a 2-1 decision this afternoon on the road in non-league action at Reynolds Field. It was the first-ever men’s soccer meeting between the two schools.

Salve Regina notched the first goal of the game when Ken Johnson scored the only first-half goal with an assist from first-year forward senior Brian Banti. The Pride countered with an equalizer five minutes after intermission as sophomore midfielder John Plourd (Southampton, Mass.) put the ball in the left corner past Seahawk netminder Kurt Ginthwain.

The score remained tied for 23 minutes before freshman midfielder Jim Dean struck his first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute. Strong wind gusts affected corner kick opportunities as both teams enjoyed just one half of corners, which Springfield getting four in the second half and Salve four in the first half.

B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) recorded four saves in the game for Springfield. The Pride outshot the Gulls 22-12 in the game.

The Pride return to action when it travels to take on Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Kick-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
