Women's Soccer Enters the ECAC Tourney as the #2 Seed

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 6, 2006) – The Springfield College women’s soccer team’s season is not quite over yet.

With its 12-5 overall record, John Gibson’s club will enter this week’s ECAC Division III New England Women’s Soccer Tournament as the #2 seed.

Springfield College will host #7-seeded Fitchburg State College (13-4-1) this Wednesday, November 8 at 7 pm at Brock-Affleck Field in a first-round match-up.

The teams in the tourney, seeded in order, are: 1) Smith, 2) Springfield, 3) Keene State, 4) Brandeis, 5) Rhode Island College, 6) Bridgewater State, 7) Fitchburg State, and 8) St. Joseph’s (Maine).

Should Springfield defeat Fitchburg State, it would then play the winner of Keene State/Bridgewater State on Saturday (Nov. 11) at home at 1 pm. The ECAC Final would be played at the highest remaining seed on Sunday (Nov. 12) at a time to be determined.

Springfield has played only Smith among all the teams in the field, losing to the Pioneers twice during the season. On Oct. 14, Smith defeated the Pride, 1-0. Then just last Saturday (Nov. 4), Smith edged SC again by one goal, 2-1, in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference semifinals played at Wheaton College. Earlier this year (Sept. 9), SC was in the midst of playing Brandeis, leading 2-0 in the first half, when that game was postponed, and ultimately cancelled, due to lightning.
