Wrestling in 2nd Place After Day 1 of the NECCWA Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 17, 2007) – The Springfield College wrestling team is currently in second place after the first day of competition at the New England College Conference Wrestling Association Championships at Roger Williams University in Bristol R.I. There is one more day of competition remaining.

Springfield is the five-time defending champion.

Johnson & Wales is in first place after Day 1 with 100.5 points. Springfield is in second with 80 points. Bridgewater State is in third with 78 points, followed by Wesleyan 65, host Roger Williams 61, Williams 60, Plymouth State 56, Rhode Island College 46.5, Southern Maine 43, MIT 32, Coast Guard 30, Norwich 21, WPI 13.5, Trinity 3.5, and Western New England 2.

Eight (of 10) Pride wrestlers are still in the hunt, competing for a championship. They include senior Ryan Hannigan (Wyantskill, N.Y.) at 125 pounds, senior Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.) at 141, junior Chris DeBlock (Sparta, N.J.) at 149, senior Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I.) at 157, junior Jacob Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y.) at 165, senior Andre Lee (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) at 174, junior Elliot Smith (Richville, N.Y.) at 184, and junior Greg Dussol (Amston, Conn.) at 197.

Several more rounds will take place Sunday. The finals will begin Sunday at 5:30 p.m., with award ceremonies to follow.
