NEWTON, Mass., March 31, 2007 - Springfield College sophomore midfielder Jason Farrell (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner in the 10th minute (9:07) of the third quarter as the Pride defeated the Lasers of Lasell College, 6-4, in Pilgrim Lacrosse League action this afternoon in Newton, Mass.
The win, its second straight overall, improves SC to 2-5 overall on the season and 2-0 in Pilgrim Lacrosse League action. Lasell College falls to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Pilgrim play. The Lasers got on the board first, as Lasell's Alex Zayac scored in the sixth minute (5:40) off a feed from Jeremy Davis for the 1-0 lead. The score proved to be the lone goal of the opening period.
Pride sophomore midfielder Jake Jones (Amherst, Mass.) tied the game with a goal in the third minute (2:23) of the second quarter. Jones' score was assisted by freshman attack Joe Heney (Plainview, N.Y.). Just over five minutes later, a score from sophomore midfielder Chris Jez (Somers, Conn.) gave SC its first lead of the afternoon, 2-1.
After another Lasell score to tie the game at two-all, three straight Pride goals put SC in control. Junior midfielder Greg Welch (Peabody, Mass.), senior midfielder Adam Toutain (Sabbatus, Me.), and Farrell were credited with the scores that put the Pride up 5-2. The Lasers received two goals from Mike Maggio, however, to cut the lead to just one (5-4) with 9:07 left in regulation. At the 7:44 mark of the final quarter, although, sophomore attack Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.) assisted freshman attack Kyle Gable (Somers, Conn.) for an insurance goal to seal the game.
SC senior goalkeeper Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) gets the win for the Pride, allowing just four goals while saving five shots. Junior long-stick midfielder Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) picked up a game-high seven ground balls. SC will next compete at Amherst College in a non-conference game at 4:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon, April 2nd.
