SOUTH HADLEY, Mass., October 3, 2006 - Springfield College freshman Kaitlynn Cates (Middlebury, Conn.) and sophomore Melissa Weinstein (Allentown, Pa.) recorded singles victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, as host Mount Holyoke College defeated the Pride, 7-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match this afternoon.
The Pride drops to 1-4 overall on the season and 0-4 in conference play, as the Lyons improve to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC with the victory.
Cates, playing at No. 2 singes for SC, defeated Mount Holyoke's Ashley Fallon in comeback fashion. After dropping the opening set by a convincing, 6-1 margin, Cates battled back to take the next set, 6-3, and then the super tiebreaker by a 10-5 margin. The first-year has had an impressive start to her collegiate career, recording a 4-1 singles record in the Pride's first five matches.
Weinstein, playing at No. 3 singles for SC, cruised to a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-2) over Michelle Zagardo of the Lyons. After starting off 0-3 in her singles matches this season, Weinstein has rebounded, as she has won her past two matches at No. 3 singles.
The Pride looks to snap its four-match skid as it will next host Babson College on Saturday afternoon, October 7th, in a 1:00 p.m. NEWMAC contest on the Appleton Courts.
