SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 26, 2007) – The Springfield College men’s tennis team defeated the Coast Guard Academy, 5-0, this afternoon in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference first-round tournament game at SC’s Appleton Courts.
With the win, #3-seeded Springfield raises its record to 8-6 overall. Coast Guard, the #6-seed, falls to 5-8. Just 15 days ago, Springfield had beaten Coast Guard, 8-1, in New London, Conn. With the win, Springfield now advances to play Wheaton, the #2-seed, at MIT on Saturday. SC had lost at Wheaton, 7-2, on Saturday, April 14 in a regular-season match.
Springfield got off to a great start by winning all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of sophomore Andrew Constant (Kingston, N.Y.) and junior Joe Lisi (Southbridge, Mass.) won their match, 8-5, over Coast Guard’s duo of junior Ryan Beck (Freehold, N.J.) and freshman Chris Pappe (Kenosha, Wisc.). SC’s No. 2 doubles team of senior Ethan Clime (Bristol, Me.) and junior Rahul Bala (Enfield, Conn.) won their match, 8-2. SC’s No. 3 doubles team of freshman Trevor Romanzi (Bayshore, N.Y.) and junior Guy Lepore (Bayshore, N.Y.) were victors by an 8-3 count.
Given that it was tournament play, the match was going to end as soon as a team reached five team points. The No. 4 singles match went to SC very quickly as Bala defeated CG sophomore Lynn Schrayshuen (Manlius, N.Y.), 6-0, 6-0, for the fourth team point. Not long thereafter, Clime, playing his last match on his home courts as a senior, provided the clincher, winning 6-1, 6-1 over sophomore Tim Ozimek (Silverdale, Wash.).
A few seconds after that, SC freshman Tim Tunis (Sudbury, Mass.) defeated his opponent, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6. But that match will not count in the official team score.
Springfield was also in good shape at its No. 2 and 5 matches, while Coast Guard was up a set at No. 1 singles.
The match began with doubles play.
