Men's Lacrosse Drops 15-8 Decision to No. 16 SUNY Cortland at Carrier Dome

SYRACUSE, N.Y., March 17, 2007 – Junior Billy Fuchs scored six goals and assisted on two others as SUNY Cortland, ranked 16th in Division III, defeated Springfield College, 15-8, at Syracuse University's Carrier Dome. The game was the first of a tripleheader that also featured Syracuse vs. Johns Hopkins, and Le Moyne vs. C.W. Post.

Junior Ryan Heath added three goals and three assists, and senior Ryan Simensky recorded three goals and two assists for the Red Dragons. Sophomore Kevin Kliszczewicz scored twice, his first two goals of the season, and junior Kyle Simensky notched three assists. Sophomore Matt Hipenbecker made eight saves.

SC sophomore Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.) led the Pride (0-4) with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Kyle Gable (Somers, Conn.) scored twice, and junior Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, Me.) added a goal and an assist. Senior Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) started in goal for SC. He made five saves and allowed six goals in the first period before being replaced by sophomore Tom Albano (Ridgewood, N.J.). Albano recorded 12 saves over the final three periods.

Cortland led 6-0 after the first quarter, including three straight goals by Fuchs in the final 4:38 of the period. The Pride responded by scoring the first four goals of the second quarter, three on extra-man situations, and was within 6-4 with 7:10 left in the half.

Kliszczewicz and Fuchs scored in the final three minutes of the half to give the Red Dragons an 8-4 halftime lead. Fuchs added another goal 3:01 into the third quarter to extend the lead to 9-4. Cortland was up 10-5 after three quarters and pushed its advantage to 12-5 on goals by Ryan Simensky and Heath in the first 2:48 of the fourth quarter. SC mounted one last run, scoring three straight goals to draw within 12-8 with 7:55 remaining, but Cortland scored the final three goals to seal the contest.

The Pride, still in search of its first victory of the 2007 season, heads to Middlebury College for a non-conference match-up on Wednesday afternoon, March 21st, at 4:00 p.m. Last season, SC and Middlebury split in their two meetings, with the Pride knocking off the Panthers by an 11-10 margin at home, as Middlebury then defeated SC in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
