Wrestling Easily Handles Williams, 36-7, in Blake Arena

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 23, 2008) – The Springfield College wrestling team won eight individual matches en route to a 36-7 victory over Williams tonight at Blake Arena.

In the very latest New England Division III rankings, released early in the week, Williams is third, while Springfield is seventh. The rankings reflected exactly where each team finished at the New England Wrestling Association Team Duals competition at Bridgewater State last Sunday.

Neither team was at full strength tonight. Williams jumped out to a 3-0 lead when freshman Josh Mattana (Great Neck, N.Y.) won his bout, 9-3.

But Springfield then began a string of seven straight victories, which produced 33 points. It included wins by freshman Blaze Chatham (Wallkill, N.Y.) at 133; senior Jamie Sgaglione (No. Massapequa, N.Y.) at 141; senior Chris DeBlock (Sparta, N.J.) by forfeit at 149; junior Rob Mifsud (Somers, N.Y.) at 157; senior Jacob Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y.) by tech fall at 165; freshman Anthony Scarpetti (Lititz, Pa.) by pin at 174; and freshman Brandon Sundwall (Guilford, Conn.) at 184.

Junior Kyle Ayer (Topsfield, Mass.) halted the Pride streak for Williams by winning his match at 197 by a score of 10-2. But junior Chris Brown (East Hartford, Conn.) finished matters for SC by winning his match, 8-1, at heavyweight.

Springfield will next wrestle at Boston University next Wednesday at 7 pm.
