Tara McCarthy has been chosen Springfield College's Female Maroon Club Athlete of the Week (Feb. 18) after she led the Pride to a pair of wins in NEWMAC play this past week.
The Bristol, R.I. native averaged 19 points per game in a pair of contests this week as she shot 56.5% from the field (13-23), connected on 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. She also averaged 6.0 rebounds per game to go along with eight assists and four steals.
McCarthy tallied 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals as the Pride cruised past Mount Holyoke, 74-47, on Wednesday. On Saturday, McCarthy's game-high 24 points moved her into fourth place on the Springfield all-time scoring list. She went 8-of-11 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line as she also added five rebounds and three assists in Springfield's 79-64 win over Clark.
To date, the senior guard has netted 1,316 points. With her 24 points against Clark, McCarthy passed Sharon Playdon (1981-1984), who tallied 1,313 points in her career. McCarthy now needs 69 points to move into third place, currently held by Donna Masterson (1994-1998), who netted 1,384 points.
