Wrestling Leads NECCWA Championships After Day One

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. , (February 18, 2006) – The 14th-ranked Springfield College wrestling team finds itself in 1st place after Day 1 of competition at the 2006 New England College Conference Wrestling Association Championships at Wesleyan University. Springfield is attempting to win this competition for the 10th straight year.

The Pride has amassed 107.5 team points heading into the second and final day of competition. Following Springfield, in order, are 17th-ranked Johnson & Wales with 103, 30th-ranked Rogers Williams (80.5), Norwich (60), Williams (54), Wesleyan (42), Bridgewater State (41), WNEC (29.5), Plymouth State (28), Coast Guard (27.5), Southern Maine (26.5), Trinity (26), RIC (22.5), WPI (10.5), and MIT (7.5).

Springfield has all 10 of its wrestlers still alive in the competition, while JWU has 9 still active. Leading the charge for Springfield are four wrestlers who were all seeded #1 in their respective weight classes. Thus far all four have remained unbeaten. They are 141-pound junior Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan HS), 157-pound sophomore Jake Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur HS), 184-pound sophomore Elliot Smith (Richville, N.Y./Gouverneur HS), and 197-pound senior Jason Leckey (Guilford, Conn./Guilford HS).

Gaeta is ranked #3 in the nation, the highest-ranking wrestler from the NECCWA conference, which includes 15 schools./p>

Also still alive in the consolation brackets are 125-pound senior Derek McNerney (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin HS), 133-pound senior Peter Marques (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa HS), 149-pound junior Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS), 165-pound senior Bill Koch (Hackettstown, N.J./Mount Olive HS), 174-pound senior Scott Faivre (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip HS), and junior heavyweight Phil McGeough (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa HS). DeCiccio was seeded 2nd, Marques, Koch, and Faivre all 4th, McNerney 5th, and McGeough 6th.

Daryl Arroyo Former Springfield College All-American Daryl Arroyo will be entering his 19th season as the head wrestling coach at his alma mater in 2008-09.
