SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 28, 2006 – Springfield College senior guard Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) has been named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Men’s Basketball First-Team, in an announcement made this afternoon. It is the third consecutive season that Yvon has landed a spot on the first-team.
After being named the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in 2003, the senior guard has been honored as a first-team All-NEWMAC selection in now his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. Yvon has finished his illustrious Springfield College career as the school’s all-time leading scorer, pouring in a four-year total of 2,101 points, as he became the first player in NEWMAC history this season to reach the 2,000-point plateau and just the 17th men’s basketball athlete in New England Division III history to reach the milestone.
The senior co-captain, a graduate of Cathedral High School, led the NEWMAC in scoring all season long, finishing the year with an average of 23.0 points per game for a total of 597 in his final campaign. Yvon was tops in the conference in three-point field goals made per game this season, averaging 3.0 while netting a grand total of 78 for the season. Yvon also finished the year at second in the league in free throw percentage (83.1, 123-148), seventh in three-point field goal percentage (38.2, 78-204), and eighth in steals (1.3/game, 32 total).
