SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 11, 2007 – Springfield College sophomore forward Liz Brosseau (Franklin, Mass.) came off the bench to pour in a career-high 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds as the Pride cruised past the Coast Guard Academy Bears, 70-42, this evening in SC’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) home opener.

The Pride (5-8, 1-2 NEWMAC) used an 18-0 run in the early stages of the first stanza to break away from Coast Guard in snapping its four-game losing streak. With the loss, its first of the NEWMAC season, the Bears fall to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

SC junior guard Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I.) continued her solid play with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor. McCarthy also added five assists. Junior tri-captain Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) had an all-around solid performance with eight points, seven assists, three steals and three boards. Sophomore center Lauren O’Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.) led the way in the rebounding department with a team-best 11 caroms.

Coast Guard was paced by first-year forward Melissa Martinelli with double-double numbers of 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior guard Natalie Moyer, who came into the game as the NEWMAC’s top scorer (20.9 ppg), was held to just 14 points. Junior guard DeCarol Davis played well for the visitors with six points, eight rebounds and four steals.

The Pride returns to action on Saturday night, January 13th, when SC hosts Babson College in a NEWMAC contest at Blake Arena in an 8:00 p.m. start.
