SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – February 24, 2007 – Andy Kelly finished second in the all-around to lead the Springfield College men’s gymnastics team to victory over both MIT and the University of Vermont this afternoon at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.
Springfield College scored 182.950 points to MIT’s 181.700, and Vermont’s 121.35.
Kelly, a sophomore from Marston Mills, Mass., not only finished second in the all-around (45.250), he also placed first in the floor exercise (8.600) and second in the still rings (8.100).
Others who did well for Springfield included freshman Keith Stumph (Williamsville, N.Y.), who placed first in the vault (8.200); junior JJ Ferreira (Naugatuck, Conn.), who placed second in the vault (8.050); and senior Aric Hines (Greensboro, N.C.), who placed third in the vault (7.500) and third in the parallel bars (8.000).
Also doing well for SC included sophomore PJ Fusco (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), who placed second in the high bar (7.400), junior Matt Davis (Southboro, Mass.), who placed third in the high bar (7.300), sophomore Matt Bolognese (Stony Brook, N.Y.), who placed third in the rings (8.050), and freshman Matt Tocchio (Braintree, Mass.), who placed third in the pommel horse (7.950).
Springfield will host the New England Invitational Championships next Sunday, March 4 at Blake Arena. Teams scheduled to appear at the Championship include Springfield, James Madison, MIT, Temple, and Vermont.
