CAMBRIDGE, Mass., September 26, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore Caitlin Mulroy (Syracuse, N.Y.) compiled a team-best 28 assists to go along with 16 digs, two kills and one service ace, but it was the host Engineers of MIT which defeated the Pride, 3-0, this evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
The first frame of the match was extremely competitive, as MIT (16-1, 4-0) barely edged the Pride by a 30-26 margin after SC led early in the game, 10-5. The Engineers then proved to be too much for SC in the final two games, winning by scores of 30-16 and 30-15. With the loss, the Pride drops to 13-3 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC standings.
Senior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) recorded a team-high 18 digs in the loss. Seniors Kathryn Becker (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Nicole Curtin (Beacon, N.Y.) registered team-bests in the kills department with just five apiece.
Next on SC's schedule is a trip to New London, Conn., to take on Coast Guard (8-2, 3-1) in a conference match-up. The contest against Coast Guard is an important match for the Pride since the two teams currently hold a three-way tie with Clark University (9-2, 3-1) and Wellesley College (5-3, 3-1) for second place in the NEWMAC.
