No. 13 Wrestling Wins NECCWA Dual Championship
BRIDGEWATER, Mass., January 25, 2004 – Springfield College seniors
Mike McWilliams (Newton, N.J.) and
Tom Medonis (Wethersfield, Conn.) each won four matches to lead the No. 13 Pride to four straight wins and the New England College Conference Wrestling Association Dual Championship crown, Sunday at Bridgewater State College.
Springfield avenged a loss at No. 12 Norwich earlier in the week on Wednesday (Jan. 21), defeating the tournament's top seed, 21-14, in the championship match. The Cadets opened up a 10-6 lead after the first five bouts, before three straight wins by junior
Tim O'Donnell (Hudson, N.H.) at 165, junior
Brian Viglione (Chelmsford, Mass.) at 174, and McWilliams at 184, put the Pride ahead, 17-14, going into the final bout. Medonis, the No. 8-ranked 197-pounder in the nation, registered a major decision at 285 to notch his 30th win of the season and give SC the victory.
The Pride (13-4) started the tournament with a 45-0 shutout of Western New England, before defeating Wesleyan (25-15) and Rhode Island College (26-15) to reach the championship match with Norwich.
Sophomore
Pete Marques (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded a 4-0 mark on the day, including three victories in the 133-pound weight class, to improve to 21-12 this season. McWilliams stands at 21-11, while O'Donnell is 18-7, and Viglione is 32-5.
