

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --October 5, 2007 -- The Springfield College women’s volleyball team held the Randolph College Wildcats to a -.030 hitting percentage en route to a 3-0 victory in the opening game of the Tom Hay Invitational on Friday evening in Blake Arena. With the win, the Pride improve to 15-6 on the season while Randolph drops to 3-13.
Springfield won the match by the scores 30-18, 30-14, and 30-17.
Both teams battled back and forth in the opening game until an Aylene Ilkson (Baldwin, N.Y.) ace put the Pride up for good at 18-17. Springfield closed out the game on a 13-1 run to grab the first game, 30-18. The Pride used a pair of service aces from Aidan Tousey (Irvington, N.Y.) and a pair of kills from Lindsay Marone (Hamden, Conn.) to spark the run.
In the second game, after a Pride attack error brought the Wildcats within two at 8-6, Springfield went on to outscore the visitors 22-8 en route to a second-game win. The Wildcats managed to hit -.081 in the second game while the Pride hit .303. Bethany Stosz (Amherst, Mass.) led the way for the Pride in the second game as she hammered out four kills and added a pair of blocks.
Springfield raced out to a 7-0 lead in the third game after a kill from Ilkson. However, Randolph would rattle off six-straight points, forcing Springfield head coach Joel Dearing to call a time out. Coming out of the timeout, the Pride defense stymied the Wildcat attack, holding the visitors to a .000 hitting percentage for the third game.
Three members of the Springfield squad hammered out double-digit kills with Stosz leading the way. She recorded 12 kills on a sparkling .526 hitting percentage and added five blocks. Heidi Yohe (Deer Park, Wash.) added 10 kills at a .389 clip while Sarah Lang-Rodean (Mansfield Center, Conn.) controlled the middle with 10 kills on a .444 hitting percentage. Kelsea Hellyar (Fairhaven, Mass.) dished out 36 assists directing the offense while Ilkson finished with nine kills and a match-high 12 digs.
Emily Wade finished with eight kills for the Wildcats while Lindsay Wood chipped in with 10 digs.
Springfield returns to action on Saturday morning when the Pride square off against Western Connecticut at 11:00 a.m.
In the other matches this afternoon, Roger Williams outlasted Western Connecticut, 3-2 (19-30, 30-17, 12-30, 30-26, 15-4) and Plymouth State topped WNEC, 3-0 (30-27, 33-31, 30-20).
Joel Dearing will enter his 20th season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2008. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 638-293 (.685) overall mark in 27 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
